Wellington Arcade
Down in Cannons Creek was an old strip-mall that was run-down before it was built.
It was here, between a bakery and dairy that I first discovered the local arcade. A long room that glowed brighter than my school’s OHP. Tall shadows crowded the screens, faces lit with games of Street Fighter and Donkey Kong. They called them 'Spacies' back then, and I still don't know if it was a name for the machines, or the people that played them. The eager smell of sweat and Raro was electric, and it stuck to the machines like glue. That room was a neon cathedral of glowing pixels with a chorus of beeps, pings, and the frantic drum of fingers tapping buttons. If you had the right sized coin you could play. I never had the right sized coin, but the big kids did. They played those buttons with the zeal of a concert pianist on crack.
Those glowing coffins are long gone—replaced by Nintendos and iPhone games with loot boxes. Small reminders of their arcade ancestors.
This T-shirt is a wearable memoir to those digital altars of 1990’s Wellington. Whether you played the game in the city or the suburbs. Or never played at all.
